On Turning 40

YouTube Preview Image

There was a time when I thought 40 was the end. I was probably 19 or so, drunk on the peculiar poetry of youth, philosophical in the way that only the semi-mature can be, and caught in the strange shadowlands between the unbounded world-is-your-oyster optimism and the soul-killing despair at the evils of the world.

40? Might as well be dead.

All young men, perhaps, wish to be Achilles: heroic, strong, beautiful, foolhardy, passionate, burning like a flame, and passing on in the flower of their youth. The smarter and luckier of us perhaps find our way to becoming Odysseus: canny, wise, old, and finding happiness in the simple joys of hearth and home.

So here I am at the magical age. The day doesn’t feel any different from any other day. The heavens did not open up with significant signs. The earth did not move, since I don’t live in California. Or Washington DC. But I can’t help but reflect on a few things, especially with literally dozens of people on Facebook wishing me a happy birthday. Consider this my heartfelt thanks to all of you.

New Year’s Eve, 2010

A new chapter...

It is not often a man has the opportunity to greet the New Year knowing that it is the start of a new chapter in his life. Tonight, with but a few minutes to go before the clock strikes midnight (Central Time, as midnight would have struck already in my old Eastern Standard life), I find that I have been given just that opportunity. All around me are the unsettled detritus of a move-in interrupted, as my family and I completed our migration from New Jersey to Texas just this afternoon. I greet the New Year with unopened boxes. I hope it is not symbolic of the twelve months ahead.

Farewell, then 2010. I did not know when I greeted you a year ago that you would have turned out to be so… interesting. You have brought me triumph and loss, hellos too numerous to mention and a few goodbyes as well. You’ve brought me lovers, haters, and those in between. You have taught me the wisdom of fools and the folly of wise men. I met unexpected friends, and discovered hidden enemies; both, I shall treasure, and seek to judge myself by them both. There were heights of inspired passion, and then depths of mundane disappointment. I have found things out, and been found out. You gave me dark visions of the future, but then reasons to hope in the midst of the storm. All of the deadly sins, all of the cardinal virtues, plus fear, plus death (Farewell, Joe), plus love, harmony, faith, courage… in short, all of those things that make human life so rich, so full, so tragic, so wonderful.

Yet, in these last minutes, I name you, 2010. You were the year of That Which Might Have Been, in all of its significance, of both tantalizing opportunities that did not materialize, and terrifying disasters that were somehow avoided.

But the New Year is here now, waiting to take the mantle from you. And for me, a new era, a new beginning, a new chapter that continues the story but in new and unexpected ways, starts. 2011, I think, will not be a year spent holding our breaths. That which might have been may come around this time. And I will be prepared.

Resolutions are beyond me; I have not the willpower for them. So instead, let me offer up a prayer for 2011 in the hopes that these things might come to pass, whether I am strong enough or not.

Give me a little more courage in my convictions, and a lot more humility. Let me never forget what should not be forgotten, and wipe from memory all that should be. Let me give more than I receive, learn more than I teach, listen more than I speak, and act more than I talk. Let me bring comfort and laughter to my friends, and destruction and fear to my foes, in equal measure. Allow me to focus on the important things while letting everything else wash over me. These things, I pray.

Happy New Year.

Remembrance Is Not Enough… A Personal Note

It’s a beautiful early fall day here in the New York City area.  There isn’t a cloud in the sky, and the bright sunlight pouring down on my quiet suburban street seems exactly like the happy rays of sunshine that fell on a younger, more innocent version of me in New York City on September 11, 2001.

Top Ten Graphic Novels – A Conversation from Twitter

[This post is purely personal, and stems from a Twitter conversation I was having with @ARDELLd, @mattrathburn, @1000wattmarc, and some others.  It was also a test of Posterous. :) ]

So taking the Twitter conversation about top three graphic novels to the next level… here’s my personal list of the Desert Island Top Ten Graphic Novels.  I had to leave out so many great works, because some are actually long series, as opposed to a graphic novel.  In other cases, it’s just so hard to pick one graphic novel from an amazing series.  Anyhow, here’s my list:

Some Notes & Observations About the New Site

Just a quick note to say that the move to a self-hosted WordPress platform is ongoing.  It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while, but haven’t really had the time to focus on it.  I still don’t really have the time, but… as much as I love WordPress.com’s hosted service, there were things I wanted to try and to learn that I simply couldn’t without going self-hosted.

The experience has been actually quite fun, and quite challenging in unexpected ways.

It wasn’t easy picking a theme, for example.  I must have looked at a dozen really interesting themes, including (of course) the Thesis theme.  Ultimately, I settled on Grid Focus by Derek Punsalan because it was so clean.  Since I can’t seem to say “Hello” in fewer than 500 words, legibility was a very important factor.  Plus, I tend to favor somewhat minimalist designs, with Subtraction by Khoi Vinh and the Pentagram corporate site being my two favorite website designs.  I think it’s fairly obvious that I’m completely ripping off both of them.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and in this, I am more than happy to flatter away.

I think I have most of the important things complete, but a lot remains to be done.

I’m not entirely happy with the top navigation, for example, but it’s taking a bit of time to learn enough PHP/CSS to make the changes I want.

I’ll probably keep on tinkering with little bits of the site, now that I can.  The color scheme of black/white/grey/red may see some changes over time.  Some of the rollover action isn’t where I want things to be.  And so on.

One sad note: I have had to lose the Vader image.  I tried to make it work, but with the new design of Notorious ROB, it just didn’t fit.  I may have to find a way to fit in Sephiroth, which is my Twitter icon, but even that will require some thought.

I’d love your thoughts on the design overall, where you see possible improvements, and any suggestions for resources (books, websites, etc.) for a relative newbie in the world of CSS & PHP.

Anyhow, posting has been light because of the move, but I will be getting back to it soon.  So much to talk about, so little time. :)

My Blog Header Image

So I restored the original Notorious ROB header image (of Anakin becoming Darth Vader) in tribute to Joe Ferrara of Sellsius (@jfsellsius) who liked that.  Then I heard from others that the header image is full of disturbia and sturm and drang angst.  You know what that means.

Time for a poll.

Let your voice be heard!

Notorious ROB in Japan? o.0

Honestly, one of the coolest things I’ve seen related to this blog of mine:

I'm Big in Japan!

I'm Big in Japan!

Clicking on that link brought me to this page:

Oh. My. God. o.0

Oh. My. God. o.0

Apparently, I am ロブの悪名高い in Japanese.  How can I work that into a business card….

So my employer, who graciously allows me to spout off my personal views on this blog, is offering free loot to blogger types everywhere.  I figured some of you could use $500, and since I can’t win it….

So… announcing the Lifestyle Search Essay Contest.  The topic:
