Thanks for your comments on my post, and in extended form on your blog. I'm going to cross-post as much as possible, but I have to say, I'm not fond of Blogger's forcing certain ID types on me. :) In any case...

My beef with JLS selecting Microsoft Live is somewhat subtle and has to do with timing on the one hand, and with MS on the other hand.

By timing, I mean that if JLS wanted to appeal to Gen-Y demographic (which was their goal) and usage of social networking, it seems to me that going somewhere where they're NOT doing social networking is... odd to say the least.

I haven't under-rated MS Live; I've said that MS Live is not yet a player in social networking. I don't think that position is all that arguable, except by using definitions of "social networking" that doesn't change the facts on the ground in the here and now. If email is "social networking" then, okay fine, MS is a player in social networking. So is World of Warcraft. But I don't think I would have recommended that JLS setup a WoW account to promote real estate.

Could MS Live one day dominate social networking, making FaceBook, LinkedIn, and Twitter irrelevant? Perhaps. Is that day now? Not really.

As to MS itself, I just don't like their signon process. It's clunky. That's a personal opinion, but there it is. Furthermore, one of the plagues of contemporary digital living is the proliferation of usernames and passwords. I already have a Facebook account, a LinkedIn account, a Twitter account, multiple blogs, my bank, Vanguard account, and dozens of other usernames/passwords. Do I really want to sign up for yet another online service and keep track of yet another username and password, just so I can share listings with my friends? Not really.

The larger and more important point, however, was that real estate companies -- in order to be truly innovative -- can't settle for what the technology industry has already introduced. They need to figure out how to leapfrog what's been done.

Nice post. We're going to be making changes to our site that include some similar features, and it's good to know what NOT to integrate (though on the list of platforms we were thinking of, Microsoft was sandwiched somewhere between #irc and a vast network of tin cans connected by strings)

I think this post raises some interesting questions and it is always good to have questions asked about changes and if those changes are adding value and making steps towards progress.
What is social networking anyway? I think that the mainstream user _gets_ Messenger much more readily than they _get_ twitter or even facebook. I know many non techie folks who use Messenger and hotmail but really don't understand why they should care about facebook or twitter.
It is easy to get lost in the closed _geek_ world many of us inhabit and forget there are masses of users out there who have no interest in jumping on the latest online fad just because it is there.

I can see that. JLS does do some really great stuff; I think they are one of the leaders for using the web as a large broker. And you're probably right that it has to do with their location (Seattle) and vendors they know.

And who knows? Maybe they get some real sweetheart deals for going with the hometown software giant. :)

But the user isn't going to care about that much, and that's unfortunate for JLS.
