My vote is for Bruce Springsteen. No other American artist has created as big an impact for as long a time. I believe some of his most impressive work is also some of his least commercial. Some examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF92RVQkUm8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJ9yLCcKlHk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUOB_kopu_o

(the video for the last one is not the movie that song is from and it was not used in that move. The song, "Missing" rolled over the credits for a movie called, "Bound" and was finally released as part of a compilation 3 disc set)

Bruce. No other artist has had the impact he has had for as long. He has managed to keep his old core audience and at the same time has continued to garner new fans. Most of his most amazing work is some of the least commercial. Here are some examples:

Beastie Boys
because I'm the egg man.

it doesn't hurt that they taught me how to ride around town on a low-rider bicycle, never mind the 20 years of transcending genres (punk-rock-hip hop).

[...] Rob Hahn is going to assemble a poll for the best American band. I nominate Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. I’m not a great musicologist but I fondly recall many great parties in high school, college, and especially law school that were defined by this band’s music. When I hear their songs today, I’m transported and that’s about the best compliment I can provide. [...]

My nomination:

Alison Krauss and Union Station.

Band site.

Sample Songs: When You Say Nothing At All, The Lucky One, Ghost in This House.

Why:

Simply put, Alison Krauss is a once-in-a-lifetime talent. But put her together with incredible all-star musicians like Jerry Douglas, Dan Tyminski, and Ron Block, and you have a musical equivalent of the 1927 Yankees.

AKUS pretty much reinvented bluegrass, brought incredible beauty to country, pop, and Alison herself has done so much in other genres. Her latest album was with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, for example.

I've seen them in concert, and it's like listening to the CD. These are no studio products. AKUS is real music, done by real musicians who are masters of their craft, at the highest level.

My nomination is Alison Krauss and Union Station. Take a listen, and I think you'd agree.
